Super Bowl LVIII is set for a rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, once again pitting coaches Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan against each other in the NFL title game, four years after their showdown in Super Bowl LIV, where the Chiefs emerged victorious with a score of 31-20.

For Shanahan, it will be the fourth time he faces Reid as the head coach of the Niners, seeking his first victory against the veteran Reid. In their previous three encounters, Shanahan has suffered defeats.

The first Shanahan-Reid matchup, with Shanahan as the head coach of San Francisco, occurred in 2018 when the Chiefs defeated the Bay Area team 38-27. The second occasion was in the aforementioned Super Bowl LIV, and the third was in the 2022 season, where the Chiefs once again defeated the 49ers by 44-23, this time as visitors.

Therefore, the game on February 11 is crucial for Kyle Shanahan. Winning it would not only mark his first triumph over Andy Reid but would also finally make him an NFL champion.

History of rematches doesn’t favor Shanahan

However, throughout Super Bowl history, there have been only three rematches between head coaches, with this year’s being the fourth. In the previous three instances, the coach who won the first Super Bowl also secured victory in the second.

The first rematch between coaches in a Super Bowl occurred in the 1970s when Chuck Noll, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, defeated the legendary Tom Landry and his Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X (21-17) and repeated the feat in the rematch of Super Bowl XIII (35-31).

The second rematch took place in the early 1990s when Jimmy Johnson‘s Dallas Cowboys defeated Marv Levy‘s Buffalo Bills in two consecutive Super Bowls. Johnson claimed victory in Super Bowls XXVII (52-17) and XXVIII (30-13).

The third occurrence of a Super Bowl rematch between two head coaches was in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, featuring Bill Belichick‘s New England Patriots and Tom Coughlin‘s New York Giants. In both instances, Coughlin emerged victorious (17-14 and 21-17, respectively).

Thus, Super Bowl LVIII marks the fourth occasion where two head coaches face off in a Super Bowl rematch. However, history and statistics favor Andy Reid to once again prevail over Kyle Shanahan and his 49ers.
