Paul George could have been another star NBA player in a music video if he had agreed to Nicki Minaj’s request.
Nicki Minaj is one of the most popular musical artists in the world. Her popularity and success is such that anyone would want to be in a frame with her. Imagine if she invites someone to be in a music video with her, usually no one will let go of that opportunity. But Los Angeles Clippers superstar Paul George had to decline such an invitation.
George was speaking on his podcast, Podcast P with Paul George, with his guests. One of the guests asked George if he would like to be in a music video.
To this, George chuckled and said;
Nicki Minaj reached out for me in her music video. I think at the time it was a scheduling conflict. I woulda did it. It would've been dope. It's Nicki Minaj, one of the biggest female artists, not even just female, biggest artists of our lifetime!
George added that even though the invitation came from Minaj, his situation did not give him the time to go and be in that music video. This incident happened 1 or 2 years ago.
Paul George joked in between the conversation that when the call came, he looked at his wife, Daniella George. And when she looked back at him, he told his agent that he couldn’t do it. George clarified that he was just joking and that Daniella would have loved for George to do that music video.
After all, it was Nicki Minaj who invited George. Such invitations do not come often. It is rare for such a popular musical artist to invite an NBA player to be a part of her music video.
NBA superstars and the music industry
Basketball players have long been fans of music. Since the early 2000s, basketball fashion has been hugely influenced by the rap, hip-hop, and R&B industries. Consequently, more and more players talk about their appreciation for musical artists. But NBA players have delved more into being an active part of music.
The initial revolution was led by Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal. He not only rapped but also DJs. His late great teammate Kobe Bryant has also released songs. Recently, Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving have taken the big step in releasing songs that have brought critical applause. Lillard is considered one of the best rappers in the league right now. Then there is Jimmy Butler, who recently was a part of Fall Out Boy’s new music video.
If only Paul George had taken up Nicki Minaj’s offer. He could have been one of the few trailblazers of NBA players in the music industry. His appearance could have given him newfound fame as an NBA player in a music video.
